Blekko Takes War On Spam To New Level With Zorro Update

Redwood Shores, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2011

Blekko, the new search engine that is working to eliminate spam from search results, today released a major update that for the first time utilizes millions of social cues and human edits to put the best content at the top of search results.

On the new blekko, search results pages will boost sites that blekko users have hand-picked to be included in one or more slashtags. Since its launch last November, blekko users have created over 100,000 slashtags in a wide variety of topics. Boosting sites that are included in slashtags adds a new human site review element to the continued war on spam.

Blekko highlights these efforts by listing the certified slashtags at the top of the search results and also, for each boosted site, next to its URL. For the first time, search results will display each sites logo so that users can quickly choose results from trusted brands that offer the best content.

Millions of users and hundreds of millions of searches have given us insight into what is truly great quality content on the Web and what is poor quality spam, said Rich Skrenta, CEO of blekko. This new version of blekko bakes in that intelligence in every search so the spam gets weeded out and the best content comes to the top in every search.

At its launch, blekko introduced its slashtag concept that for the first time allowed users to build their own search experience by weeding out sites that that didnt offer quality results. At the same time, slashtag creators were pointing out the sites on the Web that offered the best content and information. Users created millions of slashtags for different topics and provided millions of points of information about sites on the Web.

In addition, this release includes a new relevance model for ranking and an expanded index. This model includes a ramped up adspam algorithm, identifying millions more pages on the Web that contain multiple ads and little content. Those pages have been permanently eliminated from the blekko search index so that they will never appear in search results.
